Physical IDs to Digital IDs

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

Mirroring the global metamorphosis, modern life in India too is increasingly adopting digital channels, causing rapid shift from physical to virtual delivery of services and interaction at the societal level.

Countervailing the myriad advantages, the transformation has given rise to a host of digital security challenges faced by service providers and end users in banking, financial, e-Commerce sectors along with social platforms. This is resulting in fraudulent transactions and misrepresentations by misusing personal and on many occasions sensitive information.

The evolution curve

The escalating incidents of financial and identity thefts globally effecting colossal losses has exposed the glaring inefficiency of the widely exercised Knowledge Based Verification system that was preceded by static Personally Identifying Information (PII) verification system. It served the function of ‘identity proofing’ based on the premise that if a person was able to provide a name, address, date of birth and a government identifier like a social security number, he or she must be that person.

Soon, as the network and application expanded, static data verification proved insufficient leading to the development of Knowledge Based Verification (KBV) system. This prompted the user to answer questions based on more extensive public records, passwords, PINs, or credit history. The process involves excessive effort from the user layered with multi-factor authentication like SMS – based one – time passwords (OTP) and push notification, among others. The tedious process not only resulted in high rate of friction and customer attrition but has failed to arrest the growing instances of data breaches. This is a grave indictment of the modern cybersecurity landscape and a challenge to a safe digital future as the prevalent technologies including biometric authentication are only offering approximation of identity resulting in colossal financial and irrevocable image losses.

OkularID anchors the digital identity

In the year 1950, Alan Turing, the prodigal mind behind deciphering the formidable German coding machine Enigma, developed the famous ‘Turing Test’ to measure a computer’s ability to exhibit human like behavior. Applying the logic conversely, with quantum leap in AI technology, Liveness Detection is AI that determines if a computer is interacting with a live human. The concept is based on Dorothy E. denning’s assertion that “A good biometric system should not depend on secrecy, but the validation process must check for liveness of the readings.”

Thus, Certified Liveness Detection prevents bots and bad actors from using stolen photos, deep-fake videos, masks, or other spoofs to create or access online accounts. Liveness ensures only real humans can create and access accounts.

Converging the traditional with principles of Liveness and modern AI technology, we deploy Visual Signature that is used as a meta data which facilitates authentication of the sender as well as the receiver of the data. It works as a key derived from one’s facial biometric that efficiently facilitates signing a document for authenticity or encryption of documents, messages and transactions.

Applicable to myriad use cases, OkularID Privacy framework can be effectively used in ID Proofing, Live Authentication, Continuous KYC, Password less Access, Document Security, Digital Signatures etc in any industry where it is applicable.
